Vitec Vidcom v HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Sunday Development XI on Sun 23 Jun 2019 at 1.30pm
HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Won By 61 runs

Match report Does anybody remember that cricket comedy from the mid 90's 'Outside Edge', this could have been one of the episodes!

We were playing away to struggling in the league, Vitec Vidcom (British Sugar at Bury, to you and me!) who play at Rougham. We had the normal team selection difficulties, but everything looked ok until Saturday night, Taylor phoned in sick, and Owen was just sick of cricket!
Taylor was replaced by Cal, and Owen was given some love shampoo by his mum.
We arrived at Rougham to find a 9 nine man home team, and they hadn't got the key to the building. To waste time we wandered over the outfield (cleverley disguised as a hay field) to the wicket. There was a large black patch right where the ball pitches, it looked like someone had a bar-b-q there! One player was wearing blue cargo shorts and trainers, and one guy didn't know any of the team, and had to introduce himself!
MG assuming captaincy for the day lost the toss, and Hadleigh were put into bat (a surprise really when the home team were still waiting players!).
It was then that Arran and Owen turned up - oh dear! Both looked awful and were suffering the effect off the previous night's over drinking, same as Cal and Dave really. Arran declined opening the batting, so Dave and Phil went out to the crease. Dave was out LBW on the 3rd ball, and Phil followed in the 4th over when he was bowled. It was down to Matthew and Ben now to restore order. Matthew was bowled in the 10th over, Charlie replaced him, and was run out by Ben on his first ball! He was really impressed! We were 35-4.
Next in was Ollie, who lasted 5 overs until he was also bowled. Next in was Cal (who scored 104 the last time he had a hangover), this time he scored 100 less than that! Cal was bowled in the 19th over for 4. Arran was next in and scored the 3rd duck of the day, score 74-7. Next in was Owen, who lasted 4 overs and then was also bowled on 11. We were 91-8. Captain MG came into bat in the 24th over to stop the landslide, and to prevent Roger having to bat.
What followed next was the best recovery in the Academy team history, good running and some fine boundaries saw the score recovering. Ben hit 5 x sixes, whizzed past 50, and his maiden 100, not long after. Hadleigh were to finish on 221-8 off their 40 overs. Ben on a brilliant 117 not out, and MG a fine 46 not out.
Tea was taken, and the opportunity to soak up some of the alcohol with sponge cake, for some players!
Hadleigh went out to field. MG had a plan to allow everyone to bowl. He started with Owen and Roger, who failed to take a wicket in the first 10 overs, but kept Vitec below the required run rate. The next 9 overs were bowled by brothers Ollie and Matthew, who bowled well and took a wicket a peice. At drinks Vitec were 73-2. There was then a herrendous run out, the Vitec batsman running to his partner's crease, but his partner hadn't left. Certain that he was out, he stood there and watched Hadleigh miss the stumps, and only thanks to Owen (who was looking a bit brighter now) that the 2nd attempt to stump him was successful. Charlie and Cal both had 4 overs each, with Charlie taking 2 wickets and Cal 1. Arran and Phil were the next pair to turn their arms. Arran, bowling from 4 paces, was unsuccessful, but Phil took 2. The last batsman proved to be a hard hitter, and punished Ben and Phil's bowling, he could spoil our recovery!
MG brought Matthew back for his second stint, and was rewarded with the final 2 wickets. Vitec were all out for 159 in the 36th over.

A fine win, not what we expected when we were 74-7. It doesn't get any more 'village' than this.

A few notes:
Thankyou MG, Dave, Phil, Bloss for doing most of the umpiring and scoring on the day, as most team members were too inexperienced or too hungover!
Excessive alcohol the night before, reflects in the number of runs you score!
Bar-b-q ashes make fine rabbit hole filler in the wicket - ECB Groundsman, please take note!
