HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Sunday Development XI v Long Melford II on Sun 16 Jun 2019 at 1.30pm

Match report Initially team selection was poor, but was buoyed at the end of the week, when both Manthorpes, Ben Daniels and Cal Morrin offered their services. This really pleased Pete and Roger, and both stood down to let the 'youngsters' have a go.

This was the Sunday's team first match against Long Melford, who brought along some players that were older and younger than some of ours! Unfortunately just before the start the heavens opened, and the covers had to be quickly put on. It was a brief shower, so captain Mango (senior) agreed a 2pm start, with the overs reduced to 35. Mango lost the toss, and Long Melford elected to bat first.

Ollie and Elliot opened the bowling, and were reasonably economical. Long Melford losing their first wicket in the 12th over when on 51, to Owen's bowling. It was about this time that Ben requested to leave the field after straining something (lack of play this year!), and ruined Roger's Father's Day because he had to come on to replace him. Owen and Arran continued to bowl until the 17th over when Dom was introduced with immediate results, taking 2 wickets in his 2nd over. Cal also had success with the ball, his 2nd over a maiden, and his 3rd a wicket maiden.
Simon and Charlie both turned their arms, and both took a wicket a piece. Ollie also took one in his 2nd spell.
Long Melford finished 140-8 off their 35 overs. Extras were 28, and reminded us of where we still have room for improvement!

After a scrummy tea, Hadleigh openers Cal and Owen went out to bat. Owen was unlucky, when a ball that he hit hard was caught on the 2nd attempt. Taylor replaced him at the crease, and between him and Cal scored well, pitting on 100 runs in the next 10 overs.
Cal scored his 50 on the first ball of an over, and Simon instructed him to retire at the end of the same over. He scored another 15 in that over, and retired on a fine 65 not out.

Taylor and Arran initially had some communication errors, which nearly resulted in run-outs, but they did finally settle in. Taylor was caught on 28, when he hit it to their best fielder! Arran scored a quick 24, before being asked to retire too. Elliot and Dave were to finish the game for us in the 22nd over.

A good result, and thank you to everyone who offered to play (and thanks to Tabs for umpiring the whole game).
