Worlington Academy v HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Sunday Development XI on Sun 22 Jul 2018 at 1:30pm

Match report On another blistering hot day, off we went to Lakenheath to play Worlington Academy.

The pitch outfield resembled a desert, with the odd bit of Pampas grass and tumble weed in evidence. The wicket looked ok though.

A very thin brown rope, on brown grass, and no marker flags. It was going to be fun for umpires!

Roger deputised for Pete for the toss, which he won, and was told to bat first. Tony and Taylor padded up.
Hadleigh started well, scoring a steady 6 runs per over. Taylor was the first to be dismissed LBW when on 15 in the 10th over.
Tabs replaced him, but was caught behind in the next over. Arran replaced Tabs, only to be bowled by a full toss in the next over. We were 45-3 in the 12th over. A mix up between Pete and Roger umpiring, over ‘balls to come’ and ‘balls bowled’ resulting in a 2 ball over, was a bit embarrassing!

Isaac was next in bat, the 13 year old only playing in his 2nd adult game. What we saw next was a fine partnership between Tony and Isaac, which was to add another 115 runs over the next 20 overs. Both players scoring well, helped by the fast outfield. One too many quick runs resulted in Tony pulling a muscle, so Owen came in as runner for him.
Tony was eventually stumped on a fine 62, and Isaac was bowled on a very impressive 81.
Owen contributed with a quick 15, George a quick 6, Dave and Ollie finished off the overs with 16 and 1 not out, respectively.
Hadleigh finished on 229-7 off their 40 overs.

After tea, and a break to cool down, Hadleigh went out to field in slightly cooler conditions (only slightly though). Opening bowlers Tabs and Arran bowled well, Tabs taking his first wicket in the 2nd over, and Arran taking his first wicket in the 4th with a fine catch by Uncle Pete.

Arran was rested, and Isaac had a bowl. He bowled very well too, and was to finish with the most economical figures, unfortunately without taking a wicket.
Nobody bowled badly, but the two seasoned batsmen now in bat, had the measure of us, and together with some weary fielding, took the game away from Hadleigh. The situation not helped by ‘Dropper Daniels’ failing to catch the high scoring batsman twice!

Dave L’s fielding was restricted too, by a large boil on his inner thigh, which was playing havoc with his right testicle!

Arran was to take 3 wickets, Tabs a pair, and George 1 (his first since 2012).
Worlington passed Hadleigh’s score in the 39th over to win the game.

Man of the match – Isaac (by a long way)

Let’s hope for a cold snap for the next game!
