Thurston v HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Sunday Development XI on Sun 08 Jul 2018 at 1:30pm

Match report A very hot day for the return match to Thurston, who beat us by only 4 runs, last game.
A very green wicket, with a very brown outfield. The pavilion side was a football field, and the school side had no grass. It was going to be a day of boundaries!
Pete won the toss and elected Hadleigh to bake first in the airless conditions.

All started really well for Hadleigh, brothers Arran and Owen surprising the opening batsmen with their speed. The first 3 overs being maidens and the first runs coming off byes, debutant Harry Pembroke not being used to the speed of bowling.
During the 6th over, one of the batsmen pulled a muscle stealing a quick single, and was forced to retire.
At first drinks Thurston were 35 off 13 overs, we were doing well. During their first spell, Arran and Owen finished on very economical figures of 0-11 and 0-14 respectively. They were replaced by Taylor and Isaac, Isaac bowling the batsman with the first ball of his 3rd over, a good debut. Taylor was to also bowl the next batsman 5 overs later.
When they finished their spell, Thurston was still only 71-2 off 22 overs.

Then it all started to go horribly wrong, the two batsmen picking up Tabs’ and Roger’s slower (and in Roger’s case – varied) balls. The two were punished, with Roger finishing on 0-42 off 4, and Tabs 1-39 off 3.
Pete made the decision to reintroduce Arran and Owen to stem the flow of runs. Unfortunately the batsmen had their eye in, and runs continued to flow. Thurston scored 100 runs off the last 10 overs. Isaac and Tony both having a bowl, but to no avail.

Poor fielding and dropped catches were very much in evidence, at least 5 catches being dropped, over throws and general lacklustre in the field (except the Tampions – Pete was an example to us all). Owen was to take 2 wickets, Taylor, Arran and Tabs one each.
Thurston finished on 274-5 off their 40 overs.

After an ok tea, helped by ice creams (purchased by Bloss), Hadleigh openers Tony and Taylor went out to bat. Both made a good start and scored steadily, unfortunately Tony lost his wicket on 19 in the 11th over. Tabs went in with Fatso (not Taylor – his bat), and scored some nice boundaries. At first drinks we were 70-1 off 13 overs.

Tabs hurt his instep whilst running, and was forced to retire on 30, which brought young Isaac into bat. Isaac scored a fine 4 before being bowled, Tabs returned to the crease after lots of spraying of the injured foot and was trapped LBW on his 2nd ball. Taylor continued his fine form, and was bowled on 72 to a ball he wasn't quite ready for. A good score none the less.

This brought Arran and Owen into bat, who certainly had the opposition worried, both scoring fine 6’s and numerous 4’s. Unfortunately, Owen was bowled out to what looked like a no ball, and Arran just failing to clear a fielder on the boundary. Owen was out for 18 and Arran 33. Hopes were left with Capt Pete and Matt. Pete scoring a quick 14, and Matt not out on 17. Harry, Dave and Roger failed to contribute decent scores. Hadleigh were all out for 244, 30 short of the target.

Another game we should have won really, but the fielding seriously let us down, I blame the weather!

Well done Isaac and Harry on their Development debut, and I hope we haven’t put them off!
