HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Sunday Development XI v Thurston on Sun 17 Jun 2018 at 1:30pm

Match report A cloudy, but warm day for the Sunday’s 3rd home game in a row, against Thurston.

Special thanks to:
Tony, for assuming Captaincy (Pete on a sponsored walk)
Jamie, for stepping in for Roger (sore toe)
and Phil and Oliver, for making the team up to 11 players.

It was only the second time in the team’s history that we were to play without a Tampion in the side!

Tony won the toss and elected Thurston to bat first. Taylor and Tabs were chosen to open the bowling for Hadleigh, and started well. Tabs took his first wicket in his 2nd over, followed by his 2nd wicket in the 6th over (he was on a roll – cheese we think). Tabs’ fine bowling continued, next over was a wicket maiden, then a maiden and finished his 10th over with a double wicket take (his hat-trick ball was awful!). None the less, impressive figures of 10-2-29-5 and Thurston on 60-5 at the halfway point.
Unfortunately the next 2 batsman piled on the runs and punished Jamie’s bowling, the next wicket wasn’t taken until the 35th over, when Phil took a wicket with his last ball. Tony came on and took 2 wickets in his 2 overs, one a caught and bowled (Tony didn’t drop the catch off his own bowling we noticed – Mmm!). Taylor also took a wicket with his first ball on his 2nd stint.
Fielding highlight was Tabs’ dive, 2 full somersaults and 1 ½ twists (Tom Daley would have been proud) after the ball had passed him!
A frustrating 2nd half of the innings for Hadleigh, many dropped catches , not helped by Dubious umpiring decisions either. Thurston finished on 181-9 off their 40 overs.

A very nice tea provided by Mrs Locke was taken.

Hadleigh opening batsman, Tony and Jamie went out to bat, and batted well. We were 51 for no loss at 10 overs. Unfortunately Tony was bowled on 20 in the 11th over, and Jamie soon followed him in the 12th, when on 34. James made a good contribution of 23 runs, Harry didn’t!
Taylor was the only batsman to remain firm, and scored 55.
So it was that tail-gunner Tabs came into bat with Fatso in the 38th over, Hadleigh requiring 26 to win. 11 runs being scored in the next 2 overs meaning Hadleigh required 15 off the last over to win. Thurston gave Hadleigh a lifeline with the 3rd to last ball, bowling a no ball which Tabs swiped for 4. Unfortunately Tabs couldn’t repeat his bowling heroics with the bat, Tabs finished on 11 not out, and Hadleigh finished 4 runs short.

A close game, and a good result (all things considered). 2 weeks off now, for catching practice.
