HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Sunday Development XI v Worlington Academy on Sun 10 Jun 2018 at 1:30pm

Match report Another nice day at Friars meadow for a rearranged fixture against Worlington Academy (at home, rather than away).
Captain Pete still suffering the effect of his extreme fielding in the previous week, gave his place to nephew Owen, and the captaincy to Tony.

Worlington turned up with a very youthful side, a good sign of a thriving youth section. Our Hadleigh team had more fossils in it, than the British Museum!

Tony lost the toss, and Worlington decided to bat first. Hadleigh opening bowlers, Owen and Tabs started extremely well, Owen bowling a maiden for his first over, and Tabs taking a wicket in his first over.
Owen took his first wicket in his 2nd over when Roger took diving catch in the slips, some players made comparisons to ‘leaping Salmon’ and ‘cat’-like agility, others spoke of ‘sack of spuds’!
Either way, Worlington were 3-2 off 3 overs! A wicket maiden for Owen in his 3rd over added to Worlington woes, but this was about to change!

Batsman #4 was rather good, punishing bad balls, and good ones! A change in bowlers, didn’t improve things much either, Roger and Taylor’s bowling figures were made to look unimpressive also. Not helped when Roger dropped a catch off his own bowling, and Tony dropping a catch off his son’s bowling (there were looks!). At the halfway mark, Worlington were 114-4, and the game was being taken away from Hadleigh by a single batsman.
The breakthrough came in the 23rd over when he was stumped off Tony’s bowling by a quick acting James, when on 91.
After this, wickets continued to fall, Owen's 2nd stint improving, once he realised he was running in off Taylor's marker! Worlington were all out for 152 in the 28th over. Owen taking 5 wickets, Tony 3, and Tabs and Taylor 1 a piece, and only 4 extras.

A very nice (if a little early) tea prepared by James' mum, was taken.

Confidence was high, when Hadleigh openers Owen and Taylor took to the pitch. All was ok, until the 11th ball which Owen hit straight to a fielder, and was out for 1. James replaced him (you can always rely on James to get a few) and was bowled for a golden duck. Hadleigh for 4-2 off 2, a worse start than Worlington!
Tony came in to bat to restore sense and sensibility, father and son playing very well togather. Steadily the run rate increased, at the halfway mark Hadleigh were 67-2. After this the batsmen opened up and the run rate increased. Taylor was caught on 68 in the 31st over, with the score on 137 and the job almost done.
Tabs and ‘Fatso’ came into bat. With the scores level at the start of the 32nd over, and Tabs facing, we were all expecting a spectacular finish, but what we saw were 4 byes. Tabs suggested it was a good leave, others may suggest a good miss! Tony finished not out on 46. Extras were a rather high 33.

A good win for Hadleigh, but credit to Worlington for fielding a true Academy team.

Thanks to Tony for steering us to victory (eye test or catching practice required though!)
