HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Sunday Development XI v Earl Stonham II on Sun 06 Aug 2017 at 1:30pm

Match report After last weeks heavy loss due to being Tampionless and Lockeless, normality was almost restored. Both Locke's, and Buster (who took Eileen's place at short notice) were back in the side. Due to Buster's wealth of experience, he assumed the captaincy for our home game to Earl Stonham. A game that would cement 2nd and 3rd position in the league.
Buster started well by winning the toss, but went against Sunday tradition, and put us into bat first! He was not popular.
Tony and Jamie opened the batting, and made steady progress. Earl Stonham's opening bowler was particularly impressive with 3 consecutive maiden overs. It was in the 7th over that Hadleigh started to make runs.
Jamie was to lose his wicket first, being caught behind on 19 in the 11th over, when Hadleigh were on 41. Jamie was replaced by Tabs, Tabs and Tony batted well and took the total to 103 at 24 overs, when Tony was unluckily bowled when on 48. Tabs was caught in the next over for 31. James and Vinny made contributions of 17 and 15 respectively, and Cory and Buster were both to finish on 10 not out, at the end of our 40 overs. Hadleigh had posted what felt a below par score of 167.
After a plentiful and very nice tea, Earl Stonham went out to chase down our average score. Opening bowlers Cory and 'old master' Buster bowled well and restricted the Earl Stonham openers. Cory bowled 5 overs for 9 runs, including 2 maidens, very impressive! After 10 overs Roger and Jamie were introduced, who also bowled economically. Earl Stonham lost their first wicket in the 19th over when Cory took a fine catch off Jamie's bowling. Earl Stonham were on 50 at the halfway point, things were looking good!
Roger, fired up by having an appeal for LBW turned down, pitched one short and hard at the opening batsman, who was deceived by the 2nd bounce and was bowled. Roger repeated this two more times in his 10 overs (with balls that only bounced once) to finish on 3-28. At 29 overs Earl Stonham were on 87 for 4, we were cruising.
It was in the 30th over that a hiccup happened, Tony was introduced into the bowling, and his first two balls were hit for consecutive sixes over the wall! Women and children were taken into the kitchen for their own safety! This was not good. There was also a runout opportunity which we handled particularly 'village' like, which resulted in an additional 2 runs that had some tempers flaring. A couple of dropped catches, and Vinny and Roger getting in each others way chasing a ball down to the bottom gate boundary, didn't help!
Thankfully normality was to resume, and the runrate brought down again. Fine catches from Vinny and Tony (off his own bowling), and Buster bringing himself back on to bowl, resulted in Earl Stonham finishing their 40 overs on 139.
A win by 28 runs for Hadleigh, cementing our position in 2nd place in the league and very much still in chance of promotion - bugger!
