Earl Stonham II v HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Sunday Development XI on Sun 21 May 2017 at 1:30pm

Match report Another poor week for selection. We were only 9 until the cancellation of the T20 fixture, which meant that Gary and Cal filled the 2 vacancies (what true clubmen they are).
An important fixture, away to Earl Stonham, top of the league and unbeaten. It was also Arran's 18th birthday, today we would make him a man (he really needs to change his picture on his profile - he looks about 8!)
Pete did his normal thing and won the toss (yawn), and elected the opposition to bat first (double yawn).
Very good opening overs from Arran and Owen saw Earl Stonham with only 1 run on the board, however the two opening batsmen picked up their game and the run score steadily increased. The first wicket wasn't to fall until the 11th over when they were on 58 runs.
The break through came just after drinks (why is there always a wicket after drinks?) when we took the wicket of batsman No.1 when he was on 75, thanks to a fine catch from Arran on the boundary (the start of manhood perhaps). Earl Stonham were now on 134, but wickets continued to fall. Bloss was to take 3 x wickets, Roger a pair, and Tony a pair for only 6 runs in 4 overs. Fine bowling indeed from our senior player, showing the youngsters how to bowl properly.
Earl Stonham were to finish on 179-9 off their 40 overs, and huge improvement on the 308-1 from the previous season. We were well pleased.
After tea, and some mighty fine home baked cakes, Hadleigh openers Gary and Taylor went out to bat.
The Earl Stonham bowlers were very good, putting ball after ball on the spot, good line and length, and no extras. As a result we were 3 off 6 overs, then it got worse! Gary and Taylor were both to lose their wickets and then Tony soon after. We were 14-3 off 11 overs, all of a sudden 180 looked a distant dream.
Then we lost Vinny, so a limping Tabs took to the middle. Thankfully Cal and Tabs batted well (the opening bowlers were also changed, which helped) and many 1's and 4's were scored (Tabs couldn't run more than singles!).
Earl Stonham also lost a fielder at this point, due to injury, so this would help open up the field.
Cal and Tabs took us to 95 in the 25th over, Tabs was caught on a respectable 30, and birthday boy (man) Arran came into bat. Arran continued where he left off last week, and scored well. Cal was bowled on a very respectable 72. Owen came into bat and scored 13, and so it was that Bloss came into bat in the 37th over to join his son, needing just 9 off the last 3 overs.
Bloss finished the job off with 3 balls remaining, hitting a 4 to finish on 4 not out, and birthday boy (man) Arran on 46 not out.
A splendid game, played in a good spirit.
We're probably top of the league again now (doh!)
