Earl Stonham II v HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Sunday Development XI on Sun 21 Aug 2016 at 1:30pm

Match report A difficult week for team selection with regulars Cory, Arran, Owen and Captain Pete all unavailable. Thanks to Harvey and Charlie for making it 11 for our penultimate game of the season away at Earl Stonham, on a warm, but overcast day.
First surprise, no where to park! 2nd surprise, new pavilion (hence no parking - a party was in full swing in the village hall).
Stand-in Captain for the day 'Vincent' (whoever he is - looked like Vinny to us!) strolled out, won the toss and elected Earl Stonham to bat.
Everything started off normally, Stonham scoring 5 an over and Taylor taking his first wicket in the 5th over when the opening batsman chopped on. The only excitement was Tony confronting 2 playful scamps on the recreation ground, who had stole the boundary flags. Tony retrieved them and told them that monsters do exist, and lived under their beds.
Taylor and Tabs continued to bowl relatively economically, and Tony took the place of Taylor, when Taylor had bowled out. The 2 batsmen upted the anti, and the run rate steadily increased, Stonham were on 129 at the halfway point. Tabs was replaced by Simon, by now the run rate was up to 7 an over.
Various appeals for edges, lbw and stumpings were all turned down by the umpire, a situation not helped by the plethora of dropped catches.
A change was needed, and the change was the introduction of Harry and Roger into the bowling attack.
And my, how things did change! Instead off Stonham being on 7 and over, it went up to 10! Poor Harry and Roger took a good pasting. Roger giving the left-hander lots of practice down the legside, which he enjoyed (not enjoyed by Tony fielding at deep square leg!). With bowler selection limited or unfit to bowl, Harry and Roger persevered, but for no reward. Stonham finished on 308 for 1. The 2 batsmen scoring 165 and 114 not out respectively.
Heads were down at tea, and the decision was that 225 would be a good target score for us, from the point of view of batting bonus points.
And so it was, Locke father / son combination went out to open the batting. The pair starting well until the 4th over when the young lady bowler took a double wicket maiden, taking the wickets of Tony and Harry. It was now down to Biggy and Taylor to restore some pride, and this they did.
Fine batting from both batsmen put Hadleigh slightly ahead in the 33rd over. I think Stonham were starting to get a bit worried! Biggy whizzed past his century, and Taylor his half century.
Unfortunately both were to loose their wickets soon after, Biggy scoring a fine 136, and Taylor 75. Tabs tried to maintain the momentum, scoring a quick 23 (including a 6 out of the sun, which scattered the scorers/spectators) before being run out, soon followed by young Charlie. Vinny and MG tried their best, but Hadleigh were to finish on 288, with a fine 6 off the last ball from MG.
A damn fine attempt, it's not very often you score 288 on Sunday, and still loose. Both teams agreed it was a good match.
As a result Hadleigh have plummeted from 3rd to 5th in the league, we so wanted promotion (not!).
