Braintree v HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Saturday 1st XI on Sat 06 Aug 2016 at 1:00pm

Match report Saturday saw Hadleigh travel to Braintree in what was a huge game down out the bottom of the Division One table. On a scorching hot day, Hadleigh won the toss and elected to make first use of the wicket with Josh Davey and Luke Istead continuing their recent opening partnership. After getting through the first 5 overs Hadleigh lost their first wicket as Istead was stumped down the leg side. Ben Parker joined Davey in the middle and the pair formed a solid partnership well in excess of 50 runs with the two finding the boundary on several occasions. Parker was then caught on the boundary from a long hop bowled by the spinner and Davey then removed at the other end as he was caught behind trying to run the ball down to third man. Both batsmen making scores in the forties. Simmonds and Dias were batsmen 4 and 5 but a terrible mix up in the running meant that Simmonds was run out leaving Hadleigh in a bit of trouble. Dias recovered the situation somewhat as he plundered multiple boundaries and soon found himself on 37, before a dubious LBW decision from the umpire left Hadleigh 5 down with less than 200 on the board. Tanner and Wallis saw the score go beyond 220, with the latter being the aggressor and Tanner holding anchor. Once Wallis was dismissed after a good catch at cover, Hadleigh needed to ensure they reached 250 so Tanner contributed to play within himself until the final over, where he smashed three sixes alongside Callum Morrin who managed a couple of fours. The 50th over yielding over 20 runs which took the total to 267.

Hadleigh got off to a flyer in the field, picking up two early Braintree wickets courtesy of Istead and Tanner which made the chase of 268 look more and more unlikely. Whilst Braintree continued to score at a decent rate Hadleigh also continued to chip away and pick up wickets at crucial times. However, after Simmonds had picked up the third of the innings, Tim Rix appeared to have bowled the Braintree number 4 although there was some confusion as to whether the wicket keeper Callum Morrin had dislodged the bails so the decision from the umpires was not out. Although Hadleigh felt deflated after this decision they continued to push for wickets and Rix managed to take a fantastic caught and bowled opportunity to leave Braintree 4 wickets down. Wallis soon picked up the 5th wicket as a Hadleigh victory began to look more and more of a certainty but Braintree continued to dig in as they formed a very solid 6th wicket partnership. The runs began to flow and the match was very evenly poised until Ben Parker was able to deflect the ball onto the stumps of the non-striker off his own bowling as they game turned back in favour of Hadleigh. However several large blows for six from the number 8 batsman gave much needed momentum in the run chase for the batting side. Another crucial breakthrough was made as Ben Parker had his man caught on the boundary by Tim Rix and then a run out soon followed. Braintree were left needing 54 off the final 6 overs and had 2 wickets in hand. Another crucial partnership took the game into the final overs where Luke Istead returned to the attack; he managed to pick up the ninth wicket off the last ball of the 49th over leaving 9 runs required off the last over with just one wicket in hand. Braintree managed two fours and a bye to take them to victory with just one ball to spare in what was a thrilling game of cricket. Certain crucial umpiring decisions failed to go Hadleigh's way and ultimately were the downfall of the away side. Hadleigh must now bounce back with their home tie to Coggeshall next week who could yet still be dragged into the fight at the foot of the table.
