Halstead v HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Saturday 1st XI on Sat 23 Jul 2016 at 1:00pm
HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Won by 89 runs
Match report
On Saturday the first team traveled to Halstead in desperate need of a victory after last weeks defeat to Haverhill. Captain Ben Wallis won a crucial toss, electing to bat first and Josh Davey walked to the crease alongside Luke Istead. After a quiet start with no runs off the bat for the first two overs, Istead struck a couple of fours through the off side to add some impetus to the innings. Davey looked his assured self at one end as Istead continued to find the boundary at the other and the pairing went past 50 inside the 14th over. The partnership continued until drinks but immediately after, Davey was caught behind for 16. Mark Simmonds was at number 3 and had to battle hard early on, and watched Istead go to his half century before he was caught at mid on for 52. Alex Milnes was the next man in but was bowled for just 4 soon after spin had been introduced to the attack. This required a rebuild from Simmonds and Tanner who both reached drinks unbeaten at the 34 over mark. Simmonds however was bowled the first ball after the break for a hard fought 25. Dan Shanks' departure followed soon after leaving Hadleigh struggling, 5 down with less than 130 on the board. Captain Ben Wallis batted well with Tanner and they formed a partnership which created some momentum and a platform for some lower order hitting. Both batsman struck several useful boundaries and both making scores in the thirties. Once the two were dismissed, it was up to first team debutant Ethan Wright to help carry the team beyond 200, with a well made 21 not out. Hadleigh finishing in 203/7 after 50 overs.
Whilst this score appeared to be 30-40 runs under par, Hadleigh came out with a real buzz and energy, as they understood the importance of this game. Tanner and Istead continued their fine form with the new ball, constantly threatening the outside edge of each batsmen. Some good aggressive bowling from Istead then result in a half hearted fend from the Halstead opening batsman who guided the ball straight into the hands of Josh Davey at gully. Tanner then managed to find the outside edge of the Halstead captains bat but the catch was put down. This could have led to heads dropping but some good fight from Hadleigh meant they soon had their man, after an inspired piece of fielding from Ben Wallis who ran out his opposite number with a clean pick up and throw at extra cover. Wallis then grabbed the ball himself to bowl his off spin and soon removed the Halstead overseas player, piling the pressure onto the middle order. The pressure continued to build on the batting side as both Hadleigh spinners, Wallis and Ben Parker, bowled tight areas at a good pace which meant scoring became very difficult. After several maidens the required rate had climbed above 6 runs per over and Wallis picked up his second wicket, clean bowling the batsmen as it hit the top of leg stump. Wallis finished his 10 over spell with 3 wickets and the match was more or less won. Parker also was rewarded with a wicket from the other end after a diving catch at mid wicket from Alex Milnes. Hadleigh soon cleaned up the tail as Luke Istead returned to the attack to bowl with Tim Rix, both picking up a wicket in these spells. The final wicket was then taken by Dan Shanks who bowled Halstead's last man - Halstead all out for less than 120. A comprehensive victory for the first team in a very important period for the club. Next Saturday will see Mistley come to Friars Road, Hadleigh for an equally big game. Hopefully this is the beginning of a winning streak for the first team.
