HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Saturday 1st XI v Haverhill on Sat 16 Jul 2016 at 1:00pm

Match report On Saturday, the first team welcomed Haverhill to Friars road in the glorious Suffolk sunshine. Captain Ben Wallis lost the toss and Hadleigh were in the field first. After an outstanding start with the ball from both Kyle Tanner and Luke Istead, Haverhill had only scored 20 runs for the loss of one wicket from the first 12 overs. Istead the man with the first wicket, caught behind by Callum Morrin. As the first change bowlers entered proceedings the Haverhill batsman were becoming more and more accustomed to the conditions and began to look very comfortable with the pace of the wicket. A huge second wicket partnership allowed them to reach 150 before captain Wallis finally made the breakthrough as he bowled the Haverhill batsman. However, another partnership was built and the batting side had a great platform as they entered the final quarter of the innings. Hadleigh looked to bring more pace off the ball so Ben Parker was introduced to the attack to bowl off spin and picked up the third wicket in his second over. He also bowled the batsman who, in this instance was attempting to sweep a very full delivery. In the 43rd over opening pair Tanner and Istead returned to bowl at the death and Tanner picked up another crucial wicket as he removed the Haverhill captain LBW. A few more heavy blows were dealt however, with the middle order batsman having free reign to play all the shots in their armoury and Haverhill finished up on 276 from their 50 overs.

Hadleigh would have to bat well to chase these runs and Ben Parker and Josh Davey opened the batting with a positive mindset. Davey flashing hard to get off the mark with an edge through the slips for four. This kickstarted what became a very fluent and crucial innings for the team. At the other end Parker was removed LBW, shortly followed by Istead being caught at point. Mark Simmonds was then removed first ball as Hadleigh looked in a bit of trouble. Marlon Dias joined Davey at the crease as the pair formed a mini partnership but after some strong hitting from Dias, he was removed by the first ball the spinner bowled. Davey meanwhile continued on his way and the loss of wickets at the other end didn't seem to affect his play. Captain Ben Wallis, batting at 6 struck a couple of fours through the off side before a bottom edge saw him caught behind. The wickets continued to tumble and whilst Davey passed 50, he eventually ran out of support at the other end as Hadleigh were bowled out for 150. Davey finishing just shy of 70. A tough defeat to take but a huge game awaits next week against Halstead, a chance to right the wrongs of this week.
