HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Saturday 1st XI v Copford on Sat 09 Jul 2016 at 1:00pm

Match report Having gone the whole of June without a win, the first team were in desperate need of a performance as they hosted bottom of the league Copford on Saturday. Hadleigh skipper Ben Wallis won the toss and elected to field, a decision that was almost immediately vindicated as the first ball of the game was edged to second slip but was unfortunately shelled. The bowler Luke Istead cut a frustrated figure but he soon had his man as both Tanner and Istead removed the Copford openers shortly after. With two early wickets on the board for Hadleigh, this was stark contrast to the state of play when these sides first met at the beginning of the season and the pressure further began to show on the batting side as Tanner picked up his second wicket. Having seen his first wicket caught fantastically at first slip by Josh Davey, this time the edge went straight into the grasp of second slip where Ben Wallis took the catch. Tim Rix was then introduced to the attack and and toiled away before being rewarded with his first wicket of the day. Dan Shanks taking a superb horizontal catch at square leg. Rix then went on to pick up a further 3 wickets including another caught at square leg by Shanks, one at cover by Marlon Dias and the other wicket being bowled. This left Copford in a lot of trouble and Tanner and Istead returned to clean up the tail - Copford all out for 68. With three catches for wicket keeper Morrin as well as two going to the slips, Hadleigh clearly earning their wickets by hitting good areas with the ball. Something that must now continue for the rest of the season.

With only 69 to chase for a probable victory, tea was delayed and Hadleigh openers Josh Davey and Ben Parker walked out to bat under minimal pressure. Parker was able to dominate from the off as he punished anything loose hitting a couple wonderful cut shots to the fence for four. Davey struggled at the other end but after he was removed without scoring Luke Istead walked to the crease and looked to join Parker in being positive. Neither batsmen showed any mercy to Copford's demoralised bowling attack and the game was wrapped up in the 16th over with a huge six from Istead, as he finished on 35 not out. Parker finishing on 34 not out from the other end in what is the most comprehensive victory for the first team this season. However, with other teams at the foot of the table also winning on Saturday, the team have some important games coming up this month and the challenge is to maintain this high level of performance when the stakes are even higher. Another home fixture next week as fellow strugglers Haverhill make the journey over to Friars Road
