HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Won by 7 wickets

Match report On an extremely mild Saturday morning, the first XI traveled to newly promoted Copford for the opening game of the season, following last week's rained off fixture vs Witham. The team were raring to go, and after skipper Ben Wallis made it 12 successful tosses in a row, Hadleigh inserted Copford for their first taste of Division One cricket. A below par spell from Hadleigh's opening pair Tanner and Istead led to Copford getting off to a very strong start despite the bowler friendly conditions. The opening stand went past fifty but some tight bowling from Tom Piddington, backed up by good fielding from the whole of the Hadleigh side, notably Marlon Dias, meant that the batting side never got away. Debutant James French bowled a promising five over spell, but it was the captain Ben Wallis who eventually made the breakthrough after replacing French to bowl his off-spin, and the second wicket fell soon after from the other end courtesy of a Piddington. Wallis and Piddington continued to build pressure and after the latter completed his 10 over spell, the joker of the pack Mark Simmonds continued in the same vain, consistently hitting a good area, and he was rewarded with two vital wickets. The home side's run rate continued to drop and with Wallis picking up a second wicket courtesy of some sharp glove work from the young gun Callum Morrin from behind the sticks, a score of 200+ looked a long way off. Istead and Tanner returned to the attack to try and restrict Copford's lower order in the final ten overs but after some good batting targeting the small boundary, the momentum switched in favour of the home side. Tanner picked up his only wicket of the innings which he owes much to Simmonds who, after an outstanding bowling spell still showed the athleticism to take a high catch over his head on the square leg boundary. The added pace on the ball seemed to be working in favour of the batting side so Wallis turned to Ben Parker to bowl some more off-spin which had worked so well for the captain himself earlier on in the innings. Parker managed to pick up two wickets which further helped to slow the run rate, although some late hitting still meant that Copford reached a competitve score of 229/9 at the halfway stage.

Wallis and Parker strolled out to the middle to lead the chase, but Wallis was bowled for a duck inside the second over, leading to Tom Piddington walking to the crease to bat at number three for the first time in his Hadleigh career. He looked in good touch very early on, crunching a straight drive back past the bowler whilst Parker went about his business quietly at the other end. Parker was then also bowled after making a solid 26 for the team. Number four Marlon Dias played some promising shots but after contributing 11 to the score he was caught at cover which left the game in the balance. Piddington was joined by overseas debutant Luke Istead who was keen to impose himself on the game. Istead charged his second ball and hit the bowler over extra cover to get himself off the mark. Piddington continued to play in his flamboyant style playing some exquisite shots that most players can only dream of playing, clearing the ropes on multiple occasions. Istead followed suit and hit some similarly outstanding shots and not long after the partnership passed 100, Piddington crunched a shot through the covers to bring up his personal milestone, scoring his maiden Hadleigh hundred. Istead passed 50 also, before finishing the game off in style with a huge six over square leg winning by seven wickets. Istead finished on 70 from just 51 balls with Piddington ending up on 113, an innings which included 13 fours and 5 sixes. A very strong start to the season for the first team, although tougher tasks may lie ahead over the next five months - Next up is an away trip to Haverhill, another newly promoted side to Division One this season.
