Earl Stonham II v HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Sunday Development XI on Sun 08 Sep 2013 at 1.30 pm

Match report Last game of the season! The Earl Stonham captain telling us that, Earl Stonham required 7 points to avoid relegation, and Hadleigh needed 4 to do the same.
Pete won the toss again (he's been a good tosser all year!), and put Earl Stonham into bat, on a wicket that looked like it had been used for a ploughing competition on the previous day.
The wicket probably favoured spin bowlers on the day, and we were without the services of both Ash and Daniel Thornton.
Despite this, opening bowlers Daniel Shanks and Arran Tampion both started very well, and after 10 overs, Earl Stonham had only 15 runs on the board. Fine bowling by the youngsters indeed.
Next to bowl were the Tampion brothers, Bloss and Buster. The batsmen were not so kind to these seniors, and the run rate esculated!
Rain stopped play in the 21st over, and the covers came on. Play resumed about 45 minutes later, Bloss making the breakthrough to take the first wicket with a fine bowl. He repeated this a few overs later, to take his 2nd scalp.
Despite some good fielding by Pete and Rog, Earl Stonham continued to find the gaps and a good score looked likely. A fine catch by Pete saw the 3rd wicket fall, and a good reflex catch by Daniel, off his own bowling, saw the 4th wicket fall. Earl Stonham eventually finished on 220 off the 40 overs.
After a hot tea (with chips), Hadleigh went out to bat on a much cooler, and slower wicket. Unfortunately Gary and Daniel were to lose their wickets early, only Blake was able to make good progress. A mighty six from Blake, saw a tree lose one of its branches! Blake lost his wicket, to a non bouncing ball, just 1 run short of his 50. With Bloss, Buster, Jamie and Vinny also dismissed, it was up to Richard Shanks (A.N. Other) and Rog, to restore pride. With a win unlikely, Hadleigh needed to score 125, to secure the 2 points now required to avoid relegation (we were 90 for 7). What followed next, was a innings that the Chuckle Brothers would have been proud off, full of errors, but 42 runs being made between them. Richard was eventually stumped for 27, and Roger hit a six off what was to be his last ball (because he missed the next one, and was bowled!).
Captain Pete and nephew Arran came into bat for the last over. It was on the last ball that Arran connected well with, and sent the ball high straight down the ground, the Earl Stonham fielder positioned himself for the catch - "DONT YOU DARE" was heard from Angie Tampion, the fielder obligingly dropped the catch and helped it on its way to the boundary (definitely not on purpose). Hadleigh finished, in very poor light, on 144.
A game lost, but the 4 points secured to avoid relegation (we think!).
