Witham II v HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Saturday 2nd X1 on Sat 22 Jun 2013 at 1.00 pm
HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Won By 6 runs

Match report Murky skies and scattered showers carried the 2's down the A12 to the old Essex adversary of Witham, and with the prospect of interruptions, it was agreed to shorten the game to 40 overs.

Witham won the toss and after watching Hadleigh's highly polished warm up routine fancied their chances at an early finish and duly asked us to bat. A quick meeting of minds before the innings resulted in a slightly left field change to the batting order and 5 minutes later Dave Hinsley (normally languishing in 8th or 9th position) was striding out to the middle to open the batting.

What followed over the next 40 overs was an education in taking the game to the opposition. A hello and goodbye from Farmer Wiles was followed by a quick 12 from the slashing blade of HCC's resident vet. With the score on 52 out came Dan 'the dangerman' Green.

The remaining 22 overs saw an unbeaten partnership including 4s, 6s and excellent running between the wickets totalling 154 runs. Green passed 50 in the last over of the game and the newly installed bookies favourite to replace Compton in the first Ashes test amassed a stupendous 124 not out.

With 15 glorious 4s and 3 missile flat 6s, Dave's innings was a true pleasure to behold. As we applauded the two great batsmen off the field the only question remaining was which end Dave wanted to open the bowling from?

30 minutes later and Dave had chosen the top end into the wind. Whether it was down to the excitement of his innings or the presence of a vet in the team Dave seemed to have endless amounts of adrenaline coursing through his body.

Witham got off to a quick start only to be pegged back by none other than Dynamo Dave taking the first wicket, and yes, you've guessed it, caught and bowled! With shouts of Messi and Neymar echoing around the ground the rest of Hadleigh's 2nd team decided to show we weren't just a one man team.

A bowling change saw Bloss and Ciaran Harris tighten the grip on Witham's runs and as scoreboard pressure took its toll, Witham continued to lose wickets finally finishing 6 runs short. Ciaran ended up with 4-45 from his 10 overs showing excellent control in a pressured situation.

As for Dave, he opened the batting and the bowling, scored 124 not out, claimed 2 wickets, took 2 catches and even managed a run out. Short of bringing on the drinks after 20 overs there wasn't anymore that could be asked of him.

All of the above meant 19 valuable points for Hadleigh 2s, a great boost for morale and I suspect one very sore Sunday morning for Mr Dave Hinsley.

Signing off,

The Meerkat
