Edwardstone v HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Sunday 1st XI (No team) on Sun 20 May 2012 at 1.30 pm

Match report

A cool and breezy afternoon greeted the Hadleigh team as they arrived after the short drive to Edwardstone. The usual suspects rolled in at 1.28 pm for a 1.30 start. Captain Grayling lost the toss then proceeded to justify this on his rather limited knowledge of metallurgy and physics. No one in the changing room was impressed.

Rix and Handley took to the rather green but hard wicket with a brisk start hitting a solid 51 from the first 10 overs. Rix eventually fell to a mistimed drive to extra cover. Sam Handley misjudged a straight one and Gary Wiles thought he was quicker than he actually was and ran himself out after hitting the ball firmly (and straight) to mid on. Gary did mention afterwards that it is usually better to run yourself out especially as Ryan was at the non strikers end.

104 after 20 overs set Hadleigh up for a potentially high score. Brett Crisp with a momentary lack of concentration (no females present this time) was well caught at short mid off for 6. Some very strong hitting from Ken Henry and Ryan Philips added some quick runs. Unfortunately a mini collapse (anonymous player, Wiles, Gladwell) meant Hadleigh finished 271-9 off our allocated 40 overs. Buster Tampion did point out that given longer he would have amassed an even greater score.

Tea was taken. The lemon drizzle cake was noted as particularly tasty.

Invigorated and ready to bowl their hearts out Buster (Russell the love muscle) Tampion and Max Planck started with some quick wickets. Bowling restrictions to Max meant he was changed after 6 overs, no such luck for Buster at the other end who bowled his regulation 10 overs (did he ever tell you about his 82 not out at Sudbury in the 1980's?) able support from the other bowlers (Gladwell, Ambrose and Handley) cleared up the remaining wickets. Edwardstone all out. Victory for the Hadleigh boys.
Could this be the start of a winning streak or was the only streak Martin Grayling looking for his lost/misplaced towel in the home changing room?
