HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Lost BY 5 wickets

Match report The penultimate game of the season and as it happened, our last home fixture saw the darkening skys of autumn fall heavy upon us.With wind and rain our season finally came to end with regard to any outside chances of promotion into the top division. Those elite clubs will have to wait at least another year to feel the force of Hadleigh.
The weather had been threatening to shows its full face from lunch, however it held off until 1.31pm when it decided to start dumping its load onto the very dry wicket and outfield. It was howeever, not sufficient to stop the flow of runs from Openers Spence and Crisp who ticked the scoreboard over with ease until Young buck Crisp was bowled for a well worked 34. Murray Spence soon followed him back to the changing rooms ( he was out by the way) . With that wicket came more rain and this interrupted the flow for the two new batsmen, who had to come off for rather heavier fall of water. Covers were positioned and an early tea was taken by all. Most hearty thanks to the Claireaux family for providing a lovely tea including a coffee cake that went rather too quickly.
With the rain continuing to fall it didn't look as if we'd be able to continue , however a break in the clouds meant the inning could be completed. Blake Ambrose took the game to Walsham , who themselves needed only to win to secure promotion back to the top flight. Unfortunately he was bowled near the end and with the fall of sam Handley for 6 it was left to Ryan-air Phillips to produce something rather spectacular with some lusty blows, including a smashing effort right into babergh country. Quite literally a full toss was dispatched straight into an upper floor window . Do go look before they fix it. It is a sight to behold to all rate payers!
Dominic Manthorpe knocked a quick 13 and yes for all those that needed to know, the willo stick did make an appearance. Strike rate of 100% and not out. Might have to retire it .
With continuing rain the away side were a little unsure as to whether batting would possible but in good heart they decided to give it a few overs . They took rather too well to the conditions early on and built up a healthy score before Simon Gladwell Esq, took the first wicket. As the late evening sun broke through the clouds we were treated to a fine Autumnal evening . This however, did not gladen the hearts of the home side enough to allow then to push for wickets and a tidy partnership ensued with both batsmen hitting 70 plus before a barrage of wicket taking balls near the end made the contest a little tighter than it might otherwise have been. Failing light conditions didn't overly affect the remaining few overs, as Walsham reached their target with 3 overs to spare.
A valiant effort by Hadleigh bowling with a bar of soap.
This now leaves us with a final fixture away to Tuddenham on Sunday. They are down and we're not going up. But please dear reader , don't let that put you off from what may well be a classic . The more support the better. In fact any support will do!

champagne moment: Ryan phillips giving a bit back to babergh!
Brett crisp upon being bowled trying to demonstrate his anger by whacking his bat on his pads , only to miss them.
Simon Gladwell not being too sure about my forceful Bye signalling and then proceeding to flash a response with his I-Phone from the scorehut.(can you send me the web address that umpiring site please)

ps. Our best wishes to Mark Batterbee who played his last game of the season for us as he ventures off to Afghanistan. I am sure you'll all join me in whising him a safe visit and that he returns fit and healthy for the beginning of our 2012 campaign which we hope will be a memorable one.
