Brettenham v HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Sunday 1st XI (No team) on Sun 07 Aug 2011 at 1.30pm

Match report To most it felt like arriving for your first day at boarding school (imagine it if you can those that didn't get 5 years of teachers putting you to bed). Through the gates and up the long gravel drive. This journey however, didn't end at the mighty-oaked School door but continued to the playing fields not of Eton, but Old Buckenham Hall school. The wicket , seemingly used during the week as a tennis court as the bounce of the cricket ball epitomised that of the tennis variety. A noticeable slope coupled with the tail end of hurricane Katrina ensured those that were unfortunate enough to have to bowl uphill into the excitable breeze found themselves actually slowing down prior to arrival at the crease. This may have been exaggerated by the additional climbing gear needed to reach this altitude and the first set up stumps set up at Base Camp No.1. Perhaps a two week course in grenade throwing uphill in a wind tunnel might have trained the personal sufficiently to prove effective. As you can summize, Hadleigh fielded first . The boundary edge took some noting as the majority of it was hideden under a canopy of trees . The exciting pre match advice of a tree hit in the infield( yes there were two as it happens) were to be treated(could have used a pun there) as fielders. So it was proved with Tree 1 and Tree 2 being the most effective form of boundary stoppers for Hadleigh.Runs were rather easy to come by for Brettenham despite the loss of two early wickets and it was left to a fine spell of bowling by Dan Green Esq, to peg the home side back. What was looking like a total of 220 plus, was hauled back to less than 190 by the finish of the innings. A more than capable target for the visitors. Dear reader, I fear at this stage, that some strange soporific effect took hold on Hadliegh as they munched their way through a bevvy of homemade cakes. It is rumoured that the Vast sponge delights hold a 'special' ingredient which inhibits those that eat them to fully realise their potential and render the affected player hapless against all forthcoming bowling. That probably is a slight over statement and possibly untrue however, it sounded good. With such a small outfield the run chase was always a more than possible target to achieve , however with the fall of regular wickets the run rate ever increased and with that, the newly entering batsmen were compelled to be as agressive as possible and with that, found themselves falling short by 26 runs in the final over. Fine efforts with the bat by the ever impressive Murray Spence who never fails to make batting on any surface look so damn easy. Brett Crisp put up a good fight but unfortuantely ran out of time and partners.
Once the 'slow down potion' inserted in the cake mixture had finally worn off, the main bulk of the players slipped quietly off to the Hitcham White horse public house. Met by a rather hairy dog which Ryan felt compelled to stroke in certain unmentionable regions, it was left to the few remaining to mull over the afternoons events. Ginger Beer all round , however no pickled eggs passed mr Phillips lips. well at least not this time anyway.

Champagne moment. This ones a little difficult as even the funnier moments were tinged with dispair.Murray Spences caught and bowled was athlectic enough. Oh and the sight of royalty returning always makes the heart race. His royal Highness The Prince Of Colchester, blessed us with his presence . We are forever indebted sir. No red carpet this week though. Perhaps next.
