Exning v HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Sunday 1st XI (No team) on Sun 31 Jul 2011 at 1.30pm

Match report The journey to Exning was fairly uneventful – a leisurely drive in the countryside followed by a quick blast on the A14 (Josh – remember not to follow the signs for Newmarket!). We actually arrived at the ground 30 minutes early, the warm up was declined by majority, toss lost by skipper Ambrose and we were inserted against our will into the field.

The pace/spin combination of Simmonds/Gladwell that worked last week at Battisford started to work its wonder again with Gladwell dismissing the top 5 Exning batsmen with a mixture of flight, pace and a tiny amount of spin. Simmonds toiled hard for little reward in the scorebook. 20 overs soon arrived as did drinks which skipper Ambrose commented that this was the finest dilution of Robinson's Orange Squash he had tasted all season! A change of bowling was due – Tim Rix who had been begging Ambrose to bowl came on and Exning thought we had brought on our declaration bowling attack. 2 overs later Rix was replaced by Ambrose which was a shame as Rix had brought the whole family to support. At the spinners end Bang-Bang (Mohammed Asghar) pitched in with a brace of 3 wickets – he kept the crowds amused with his kayaking run up action. Total 89 all out, a fivefor for Gladwell, 3 for Bang Bang and a couple for Ambrose – good efforts all round.

Tea was taken, a fantastic spread including chicken dippers with a chilli sauce. Jaffa cakes were traded by Joshua Rix, Simmo and Crisp jnr, the latter was still recovering from his “love at first sight” moment with one of the opposing players girlfriends.

Openers Dan(gerous) Green and Ryan Phillips started to chip away at the total until, Philips, Ryder and Ambrose lost their wickets to the Exning attack leaving Dan to hit 50 or so not out and wonder boy Spence struck the biggest hit of the day into the tennis courts.

In summary a good team performance all round. Champagne (sparling perry) moments – 2 again like last week, firstly Crisp’s infatuation with the oppositions girlfriend so much so that whilst scoring he was several balls behind play and Josh Rix explaining that there was no way he could score or umpire as his girlfriend was pregnant and due date was today - explanations on a postcard please!

Oh and no betting scandals this week – strange that Grayling was absent from the team sheet?
