Battisford v HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB, SUFFOLK Sunday 1st XI (No team) on Sun 24 Jul 2011 at 1.30pm

Match report A local, as one might call him, stood anchored beside the vacant and somewhat run down local public house. In answering a voiced question from a car window he replies'Cricket pitch? ah yes mate down there on the left. Keep your eye on the ball though, especially once its gone over the fence.' Only later did it be apparent as to why he ended his directional instructions with that little gem of information. The day was sunny if not a little breezy and with the toss lost, Hadleigh were asked to bat on what looked like and evidently turned out to be a slow low wicket. With the early loss of Ryan Phillips to a direct hit run out, opener Grayling and Southern Hemisphere boy wonder Spence worked steadily through the first 10 overs before the opening bowlers were replaced and a wicket was gained. Undeterred Murray Spence and Captain Blake Ambrose set about the change of bowling with an eager appetite only bettered by the tea interval. It seemed after Ambrose was caught at point that the scoring rate might subsided, but oh how wrong we were with re-invigerated Dan Green coming to the crease like a man possessed , deposting the bowler's deliveries to the boundary at regular intervals.Backed by the reliable Spence they put on a fast paced 100 partnership with some meaty sixes being hit way over the boundary fence. This takes us back to the locals initial comment. Time spent looking for balls in thick long grass extended the time the first innings took by some 45 minutes. With Dan Green being bowled late on, just short of a deserved 50 , it was left to firstly Mark Simmonds and then Brett Crisp to help Murray Spence reach a beautifully crafted century on a difficult strip. He finally ended up with 115 not out , making it his first century for Hadleigh this season.
Tea came and went with gusto. Well done to those that took on more than one slice offresh cream victoria sponge, only to find themselves running effortlessly to the boundary trying to stop any fours.
Fortunately, there weren't too many instances of fours or sixes as the ever reliable Simon Gladwell cruised through his 10 overs like a man behind the wheel of a red porsche , arm out of the window on a sunny summers evening.Only the shape of the missle he controlled was different as the red object centred on the stumps. He conceded only 14 runs and included in that 7 maidens.Partner in crime Mark Simmonds bowled with vigour and control and kept the Battisford Batsmen guessing.
Both were eagerly backed by the returning Mark Batterbee , who with guile and control took his first 5 wicket haul in Hadleigh colours. Mohammed Asghar pitched in with another 2 wickets, which left Captain Ambrose to remove the final batsman with the stumps flying to all parts of the ground.
In conclusion, a comfortable win for the away side , started with a compitent batting display coupled by a thoroughly professional bowling performance.

Champagne moment: There are two. Firstly the century by ever reliable Murray Spence, although no pre shot routine , unlike his bowling effort from the previous week and secondly it would remiss not to mention Rayan Phillips face as he realised, once the last wicket fell, that he had indeed lost two whole english pounds. Betting scandal , did i hear you say? maybe......
